The Telluride operates with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 274 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, the Atlas uses a lighter 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to put out 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.
The Kia Telluride doesn't excel overly much until it's equipped with the available hybrid powertrain, a unit that delivers 329 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. At the time of this writing, the 2027 Telluride has not made its full debut, so it's still unclear which trims will offer the hybrid engine option.
Turning back to the Volkswagen Atlas – because it comes with a lighter engine, it has a smaller curb weight (4,317 pounds on the base model). This may make the VW Atlas a more appealing contender in terms of fuel efficiency, but we won't have the EPA-estimated MPG details on the gasoline-powered Kia Telluride until we get closer to its debut. We can, however, say that drivers consider the Atlas SUV's maximum EPA-estimated 20/27/23 MPG (City/Highway/Combined)1 sufficient for commutes, errands, and road trips.
Although the Telluride may provide more power output, both SUVs can support a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. Plus, the Atlas has a trailer hitch coming standard in the second trim level and above, while the Telluride makes it optional in all but the top two trims. The level of performance provided by the Volkswagen Atlas is only one of the reasons why Car and Driver says it "hits all the marks."2
The exterior design of these two well-equipped SUVs is appealing – they look great on the road and parked in your driveway. However, features slightly vary, with the Atlas coming out ahead with a more impressive roster.
With the VW Atlas, you get standard 18-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, roof rails, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and heated side mirrors. The Telluride also has 18-inch wheels, heated side mirrors, and LED headlights and taillights. However, you'll need to shell out for a higher-tier trim to obtain roof rails and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
To boot, the new Atlas boasts available amenities that the Telluride fails to offer at all, including heated washer nozzles and an integrated light bar on the front and back of the vehicle.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas keeps passenger comfort and convenience in mind better than the 2027 Kia Telluride. Although both have a standard touchscreen measuring 12 inches or more and three-zone climate control, only the VW Atlas brings standard heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel to the table.
